Teaching Career
Graduating
from London Teachers' College in 1965, Gary taught for thirty-two years
with the Windsor Board of Education ( subsequently named "The Greater
Essex County District School Board" ) He signed his contract for $3500
per year at 18 years of age and retired as a vice-principal at 52.
He
loved teaching, particularly when it was science. He enjoyed
learning with his students and was notorious for his many exciting
experiments that included fires and explosions. He also enjoyed having
animals in his classroom and went many steps further when he developed
the Oakwood Nature Sanctuary that was attached to Oakwood School. Gary
was a vice -principal at Glenwood School for five years and served five
years in this position at M.S. Hetherington.
Academic Career
During his career, Gary obtained three academic degrees at night and during the summer. They were:
- Bachelor of Arts University of Windsor 1970
- Master of Education University of Toronto 1975
- Bachelor of Education University of Windsor 1977
He also
taught a University Course on classroom management skills called
"Project TEACH" for Lesley College in Cambridge, MA. while he was at
Oakwood School.
